USDA Grants Protection to Eleven New Plant Varieties

WASHINGTON, March 4, 2010 -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued certificates of protection to developers of eleven new varieties of seed-reproduced and tuber-propagated plants. They include cotton and tobacco.

The eleven certificates are being issued under the Plant Variety Protection Act. The certificates require that the varieties be new, distinct, uniform and stable. The owners will have the exclusive right to reproduce, sell, import and export their products in the United States for the duration of protection.

The eleven certificates are:

--the ST 4427B2RF, ST 4554B2RF and ST 4664RF varieties of cotton, developed by Bayer CropScience LP, Research Triangle Park, N.C.;

--the 370001G, 450001G and 530001G varieties of cotton, developed by Monsanto Company, St. Louis, Mo.;

--the FM 1735LLB2 and FM 988LLB2 varieties of cotton, developed by Cotton Seed International Proprietary Limited (CAN 065 327 915) New South Wales, Australia, Bayer CropScience GmbH, Frankfurt am Main, Germany; and

--the AOB 175, AOB 171 and AOB 176 varieties of tobacco, developed by Alliance One International Inc., Morrisville, N.C.

USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service administers the Plant Variety Protection Act, which provides time- limited marketing protection to developers of new and distinct seed- reproduced and tuber-propagated plants ranging from farm crops to flowers.
