Engineer (GS-0801)

Engineers work and consult with equipment manufacturers and local contractors to ensure that heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems properly condition cotton samples for instrument evaluation. They monitor operation of the systems in all classing offices to insure continuous maintenance of conditioning. These duties may involve:

  • Works and consults with equipment manufacturers and local contractors to ensure that heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems properly condition cotton samples.
  • Consults with, overseeing, and monitoring vendors’ and local contractors’ activities to ensure that systems are manufactured and installed according to design specifications.
  • Collaborates with personnel and end users to ensure that each facility is equipped to maintain a reliable heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.
  • Provides consultation on effective utilization of available space within existing and new facilities.
  • Compiles and analyzes data for interpretation and presentation in reports, publications, and instructions on instrument capabilities and testing procedures.

Work Environment

The work primarily is performed in an office setting, but also requires travel to other offices, vendors, conferences, meetings, and training as the workload dictates to assist with engineering duties and responsibilities. It also requires working around construction sites and new equipment installations, which require getting around on rough terrain. Lifting and carrying of small equipment to work sites for investigation and climbing ladders are occasionally required. You will be exposed to cotton dust, lint fly, and equipment noise.

For GS-07 Level

For GS-09 Level and Above

Applicants must have either:

Experience:  One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level that demonstrates:

  • Experience in metallurgy, fluid mechanics, electronics, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.
  • Use of data management software such as statistical software, business intelligence (BI) applications, spreadsheets, databases, and other office applications for analyzing cotton classification data.
  • Use mechanical instruments such as high-volume instruments and automated conveyance systems.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).

OR

Education: 4-year course of study from an accredited institution AND one of the following:

  1. Have a class standing in the upper third of the graduating class;
  2. Membership in a national scholastic honor society (excluding Freshman honor societies);

OR

  1.  Meet the following GPA requirements:
    1. 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on official transcripts or as computed based on 4 years of education, or courses completed during the final 2 year of the curriculum;

      OR
       
    2. 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required course completed in the major field or courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum (GPA will be rounded to one decimal place, e.g., 2.95 rounds to 3.0 and 2.94 rounds to 2.9).

Applicants must have either:

Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level that demonstrates:

  • Conducting studies of time and motion to ensure most efficient and practical methods are applied throughout the program. Practical methods may be associated with determining efficiencies, productivity, repetitive motion.
  • Use statistical procedures for design and analysis of experiments to assist with studies.
  • Engineering skills including facilities planning and management, manufacturing procedures, design analysis, instrument testing and systems/equipment (HVAC) operations.

OR

Education: 2-years of graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree as listed in the job announcement.
