Spirit Lake Tribe LFPA Plus Executive Summary

The Spirit Lake Tribe is applying for an extension to continue with the Local Foods Cooperative Agreement. Plus, to continue to procure and distribute domestic and traditional foods to the Spirit Lake Tribe FDPIR, CSFP and Sr. Services Elderly Program, which is an underserved and impoverished community located in a designated Promise Zone. 

Spirit Lake Tribe’s goal is to continue to procure healthy, native-produced Indigenous foods procured locally within a 400-mile range. The foods will include a variety of healthy foods and pantry goods that many community members do not have access to or limited access to, such as bison, beef, pork, turkey, fish, wild rice, herbal teas, dairy products, fruits, nuts, yogurts, a variety of cheeses, traditional maple, huckleberry, and berry syrups, and honey that will offer a variety and equate to an additional food basket valued at $18 each month. 

The additional foods will be distributed to underserved community members each month who participate in the FDPIR, CSFP and the Senior Services Program. The foods will be sourced from tribal and local vendors that are socially disadvantaged and allow new and continued marketing opportunities for those producers.
