Order Authority and Regulations

The marketing order authorizes quality regulations; research and promotion programs; and markings, pack, and container regulations for onions grown in certain designated in Idaho, and Malheur County, Oregon.  The order went into effect in 1957 and was last amended under formal rulemaking on February 24, 1982.  View the full regulation.

  • Quality Regulations:  The marketing order authorizes grade, size, maturity, and quality regulations to maintain onion quality shipped to consumers. Shipping holidays are authorized under the order but have never been imposed. These requirements established for onions also apply to imported onions from early June through early March each year due to 8e requirements.
    • 8e Requirements: 8e requirements specify that imported commodities must meet the same or comparable minimum grade, size, quality, and maturity requirements, as those specified under this marketing order. Learn about Importing Onions.
  • Research and Promotion:  The marketing order authorizes production research, marketing promotion and development, to include paid advertising. Projects in these areas are currently active.
  • Pack regulations:  The marketing order authorizes regulations on the pack used to ship onions to market.
Committee Structure

The Idaho-Eastern Oregon Onion Committee administers the order locally. The Committee is composed of six producers, four handlers, and one public member. Each member has one alternate. Members and alternates serve 2-year, staggered terms of office that begin June 1. Producer and handler members are nominated by their peers at nomination meetings usually held at one location for producers and another location for handlers.
