USDA Farmers Market - Adopt a New Best Friend, Free Yoga with Your Pup & Treat Making

The USDA Farmers Market during the day operates every Friday through October from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. After the day market closes, vendors depart and new vendors set-up for the night market which runs from 4 p.m. to 7p.m until September 30th. Customers can picnic in the Headquarters People’s Garden next to the market or take purchases home to enjoy with friends and family, including your pets.

Each week at the day market, we will be highlighting what’s in season and offering short 10-minute classes, or VegUcation, where you can learn how to pick, prepare and store what’s in season. This Friday at "Veg-U" we'll be featuring sweet peppers! The free classes will be held between 11:30 AM and 1:00 PM.

This week the USDA Farmers Market at Night is “All About Sweet Peppers and Puppies!” This Friday, July 29 from 4 to 7 p.m., bring your dog for free yoga or a treat making classes. No dog? No problem. The Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League will be at the farmers market with adoptable dogs and cats that you can take home the same day. Anyone who adopts a pet at the farmers market will also receive 5 free classes at Yoga Heights and a free bag of treats from Spoil Me Rotten Dog Biscuit Co.

Learn how to make a delicious treat featuring local peppers for you and your dog in a few easy steps at the VegU tent at 4:30, 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Mini pepper omelettes are so simple to make and vet approved according to the American Kennel Club.

At 5:30 p.m. join us for a fun filled yoga class for you and your pup with Yoga Heights in the People’s Garden, right next to the market (12th Street and Jefferson Drive, SW). Flow for 60 minutes in an all levels yoga class designed for you and your dog to interact, relax and have some fun.  See if your dog will join you in Down Dog or maybe they'll knock over your tree -- come ready to play, laugh and have a great time with fellow yogis and their pups.  Please bring your own yoga mat, and dogs should plan to stay on their leash. With or without a dog, you're welcome to enjoy the yoga.

The event will include food from farmers, ranchers and small business owners in the Chesapeake Bay Region and live music. The USDA Farmers Market at Night is located on the corner of 12th Street and Independence Ave, SW across from the Smithsonian Metro station exit. It runs every Friday through September from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. For more information about upcoming events visit usda.gov/farmersmarket or follow @USDA_AMS on Twitter.
