The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is seeking nominees for the National Peanut Board to replace one producer member and one alternate for the states of Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue will appoint individuals to succeed members whose terms expire on Dec. 31, 2020. Appointed members and alternates will serve three-year terms.

Members and alternates are nominated by producers or producer groups within their respective states. The state peanut nomination meetings are scheduled for Mississippi on Jan. 28; Alabama and Virginia on Feb 6; Florida on Feb. 20; and North Carolina on March 6, 2020.

For information about state nomination meetings and the application process, contact Maria Mehok, the board’s Vice President of Finance and Compliance, at (678) 424-5750 or mymehok@nationalpeanutboard.org. You may also contact USDA Marketing Specialist Jeanette Palmer at (202) 720-9915 or Jeanette.Palmer@ams.usda.gov.

The National Peanut Board is industry-funded and supports the national marketing and promotion of peanuts. The board is composed of 12 producer members and their alternates for the primary peanut-producing states and one at-large member who also serves as an alternate for the minor peanut-producing states.

Since 1966, Congress has authorized industry-funded research and promotion boards to provide a framework for agricultural industries to pool resources and combine efforts to develop new markets, strengthen existing markets and conduct important research and promotion activities. The Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) provides oversight to 21 boards. The oversight ensures fiscal accountability and program integrity, and is paid for by industry assessments.

More information about the board is available on the AMS National Peanut Board web page and on the board’s website, www.nationalpeanutboard.org.
