The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced $23.5 million in grant funding awarded to increase domestic consumption of, and access to, locally and regionally produced agricultural products, and to develop new market opportunities for farm and ranch operations serving local markets.
The funding, made possible through the Farmers Market and Local Food Promotion Program, is a component of the Local Agricultural Marketing Program authorized by the 2018 Farm Bill.
The Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) administers the funds equally through two separate opportunities: the Farmers Market Promotion Program (FMPP) and the Local Food Promotion Program (LFPP). Approximately $11.75 million has been awarded through each of the programs, both require 25 percent applicant matching funds.
FMLFPP is highly-competitive. In this cycle, AMS received 183 FMPP applications and funded 49 projects (26 percent). AMS received 215 LFPP applications and funded 42 projects (20 percent).
