Carrots for Processing Grades and Standards

  1. U.S. No. 1 consists of carrots which meet the following requirements:
    1. Basic requirements:
      1. Similar varietal characteristics;
      2. Firm;
      3. Fairly well colored;
      4. Fairly well formed;
      5. Fairly smooth; and,
      6. Not woody.
    2. Free from: Unusable material.
    3. Free from damage by:
      1. Soft rot;
      2. Growth cracks;
      3. Sunburn;
      4. Green core;
      5. Pithy core;
      6. Watercore;
      7. Internal discoloration;
      8. Oil spray;
      9. Freezing;
      10. Dry rot;
      11. Other disease;
      12. Insects; and,
      13. Mechanical or other means.
    4. Free from serious damage by: Soft rot. 
  2. U.S. No. 2 consists of carrots which meet the following requirements:

    1. Basic requirements:

      1. Similar varietal characteristics;

      2. Firm;

      3. Fairly well colored;

      4. Not badly misshapen;

      5. Not excessively rough; and,

      6. Not woody.

    2. Free from: Unusable material.

    3. Free from damage by: Soft rot.

    4. Free from serious damage by:

      1. Soft rot; and,

      2. Any other cause.

    7. For tolerances see §51.4144.
