USDA Launches MARS, Delivering Market Data to Agricultural Producers Around the Globe Faster and Easier

WASHINGTON, Jan. 31, 2018 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) today announced the launch of a new electronic data platform to deliver market price information to the commodities industry. The new web-based platform, Market Analysis and Reporting Services (MARS), uses state-of-the-art technology to present detailed data sets in a more customer-focused way to better support competitive markets for producers and help stabilize food prices for American families.

Partnering for Success - How the USDA is Helping Growers Comply With the Food Safety Modernization Act

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are separate federal agencies with different missions. However, they share a robust working relationship when it comes to the 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), which shifts the focus from responding to food contamination after it occurs to preventing it in the first place. Once these FSMA directives are finalized and enforced, farmers that grow, harvest, pack, and ship fruits and vegetables will be regulated by the FDA.

The mission of the Food Safety and Commodity Specifications (FSCS) Division is to create and champion the technical requirements for food safety, quality and nutrition for AMS commodity purchases of red meat, poultry, egg products, and aquatic foods. The FSCS Division collaborates with contractors, trade associations, researchers, and other stakeholders to continuously refine and strengthen the food safety and product quality requirements for Federal food purchase programs.
