Results of: Hub City, Mitchell, and Sioux Falls Regional Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers 3.00 to 8.00 lower. Demand moderate to good, best demand was seen on light fleshed cattle suitable for backgrounding whether in a feedyard or on grass. As the cattle futures retreated quickly, drastically changing their outlook for the summer and fall contracts, cash fed cattle sales were lower as well. Cattle feeders have struggled with profitability, and had attained it, only to see the futures fall and packers quickly lower their bids. As the futures and fed cattle market fell, so did the feeder cattle market. Flesh condition of cattle remains uneven, the hay fed cattle are in very light condition, some even rough in appearance as the winter was cold and harsh, cattle coming out of growing yards in moderate to fleshy condition. Mud continues to be a problem as the rains have been frequent, cattle coming out of yards are very dirty while those turned out are much cleaner. With so much pressure on the market for the coming months cattle feeders are very critical of cattle carrying too much flesh condition. This extra flesh greatly reduces the growth potential and results in higher costs of gain for these cattle, understandably on a down market there isn’t much interest in buying cattle that won’t gain weight as quickly and efficiently as those in lighter flesh. Slaughter cows steady to 1.00 higher, bulls unevenly steady.
