SF_LS758 Sioux Falls, SD Thu May 2, 2019 USDA-SD Dept of Ag Market News Mitchell Livestock Auction Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for 05/02/2019 Receipts: 2802 Week Ago: 6190 Last Year: 7719 NOTICE: As Market News transitions reports to the MARS platform and My Market News, report formats will be converted from a text version to a more user-friendly and accessible PDF format. In the next few weeks, this report will move to the new platform and will be accessible at: https://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/lsd_mars_2022.pdf If you would like to learn more about MARS and My Market News, please contact us at Websupport.lpgmn@ams.usda.gov. Compared to last week: Feeder steers 650-1000 lbs 3.00 to 8.00 lower, over 1000 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 lower, under 650 lbs not well compared. Feeder heifers 3.00 to 8.00 lower except 600-650 and 700-750 lbs steady to 2.00 lower. Moderate demand for backgrounded yearlings bound for feedyards, good demand for fall born calves or light yearlings suitable for backgrounding. Cattle futures suffered another day of losses, especially fourth quarter 2019 Live Cattle contracts and all of the Feeder Cattle months. Lower cash sales of fed cattle combined with the downward trending futures is causing much uncertainty amongst cattle feeders. Pen conditions remain very muddy due to cool, rainy weather which is another hurdle cattle feeders have to overcome. With a weaker market outlook cattle feeders have been forced to lower their expectations for the cattle they are placing on feed. Several consignments cancelled as muddy conditions making it difficult to get cattle shipped to town. There were several consignments of fall born calves that sold on an active market, heavier cattle were not as easy to sell. Flesh light to heavy, the market was draggy on the heavy fleshed cattle. 92 percent of feeder cattle over 600 lbs. 54 percent of feeders were steers; 46 percent heifers. Next week expecting 4,500 feeder cattle and starting at 8:30 am.
