Washington, D.C., August 26, 2026 – On May 26, 2026, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) filed an administrative complaint against Dan Colbert of Sayre, Okla., for alleged violations of the Packers and Stockyards (P&S) Act.
A USDA investigation found from Oct. 4, 2023, through Feb. 28, 2024, Colbert engaged in the business of a market agency buying livestock on commission in commerce without obtaining and/or maintaining an adequate bond or bond equivalent.
In addition, Colbert purchased 1,668 head of livestock valued at $1,926,101 on 36 dates, receiving $15,247 in buying commissions. This activity was in direct violation of a previously issued Secretary’s Order dated June 22, 2023.
The P&S Act requires livestock market agencies to be properly registered and maintain a bond or bond equivalent as a measure of payment protection for livestock sellers. Failure to do so is a violation of the P&S Act and regulations.
The Secretary of Agriculture has authority to take action against violators, including issuing cease and desist orders, suspending registrations, and imposing other remedies authorized by the P&S Act.
