SJ_LS850 **Corrected to Colorado Direct Receipts** St. Joseph, MO Mon Jul 06, 2009 USDA-MO Dept of Ag Market News NATIONAL FEEDER & STOCKER CATTLE SUMMARY - WEEK ENDING 07/03/2009 RECEIPTS: Auctions Direct Video/Internet Total This Week 82,500 *100,900* 1,200 **184,600** Last Week 177,000 39,100 16,600 232,700 Last Year 48,400 35,300 2,500 86,200 Compared to last week, feeder cattle and calves sold firm to 4.00 higher on a light pre-holiday test that was heavily concentrated to the Southern Plains with most Western and Northern Plains markets extremely slow and the Southeast (with the exception of Arkansas) completely shut down for the Independence Day marketing break. Those livestock markets that were open for business were very active with a huge shot in the arm on Monday from sharply higher CME cattle futures (August Live contracts were up the 3.00 limit) and another big boost on Tuesday from limit down CBOT corn futures. August feeder cattle contracts gained 4.48 during the four day trading session, moving independently and not just the usual derivative of the corresponding live cattle contract. Tuesday’s USDA Planted Acreage Report estimated 87.035 million acres of corn, which was 1.2 percent more than last year and well above most analyst’s predictions. This was a sigh of relief to cattle feeders that had serious concerns about higher feedcosts, from expected lower new crop yields due to delayed planting from the soggy spring that especially plagued the Eastern Corn Belt. But it appears that most farmers were able to get their crop in the ground and conditions have now dried and heated up, leaving little reason to fear a corn shortage this fall. Nebraska cattle ranchers are starting to catch their breath from the fear of a Bovine Tuberculosis outbreak. There were 43 herds quarantined in 14 counties that surrounded the initial positive testing within a single herd in Rock County, which is in the heart of the Sandhills ranch country. The Nebraska Department of Agriculture seems to have the situation under control and testing of the quarantined herds is well underway, with no additional positives found so far. This TB scare has not affected the market, movement, or demand for other Midwestern feeder cattle and Bassett, NE Livestock Auction is expecting over 10,000 head for a two-day Special on July 8-9th. The market for fall delivery cattle should become well established over the next two weeks with nine full days of video marketing scheduled from just Superior and Western Livestock Markets. Buyers were aggressive this past week at the Green City, MO Yearling Special held on Wednesday. There were over 4700 head on offer, featuring 40 straight loads of yearlings including near 1000 head of top quality 800-900 lb steers that averaged 861 lbs at 102.57. These cattle were a bit “juicier” and carrying more flesh than usual after grazing on lush pastures from continuous rains across the Green Hills of north Missouri. The direct fed cattle market finally gained ground this past week with live sales 1.00-2.00 higher from 82.00-83.50 and dressed sales 2.00-3.00 higher from 131.00-132.00. This week’s reported auction volume included 59 percent over 600 lbs and 42 percent heifers.
