Slaughter Cattle Auction Mid-Session and Close 11/23/2009   

Estimated Receipts:  700

   Compared to last week, slaughter cows sold 1.00-2.00 higher with slaughter 
bulls trading firm to 1.00 higher.  Slaughter steers and heifers not tested.  A 
large offering of replacement females was on hand for the afternoon Special.  
Quality was mostly average with a few consignments of top quality bred heifers 
and young bred cows.  The bulk of the afternoon sales consisted of 2nd stage young 
to middle aged bred cows due to calve starting in February.  A very light 
offering of feeder cattle sold, but not nearly enough to establish a market or 
quote prices.  Note:  The St. Joseph Stockyards will not hold their regular 
Wednesday feeder cattle auction in observance of Thanksgiving.

   Slaughter Bulls:  Yield Grade 1-2  1470-2320 lbs 49.00-51.00, individual high 
dresser 54.00, low dressing 45.00-48.00.

   Feeder/Stocker Cows:  Medium and Large 1-2  2-4 year old open cows and 
heiferettes (mostly black) 825-1215 lbs 55.50-63.50.

   Bred Heifers:  Medium and Large 1 consignment 915 lb top quality black 2nd 
stage bred heifers 900.00-925.00 per head.    

   Bred Cows:  Medium and Large 1  4-6 year old 1190-1365 lb top quality to fancy 
black mostly 2nd stage (few 3rd) bred cows 1010.00-1200.00.  Medium and Large 1-2 
numerous groups 3-6 year old 1050-1400 lb average to good quality mostly black 2nd 
stage (few 3rd) bred cows 950.00-1060.00, few less attractive 850.00-960.00; 
similar 7 years to short and solid mouthed 700.00-875.00, mixed colored 650.00-
850.00; few aged 600.00-750.00, pkg thin 1000 lbs 500.00 per head.     

   Cow/Calf Pairs:  Medium and Large 1-2  3-7 year old average to good quality 
black 1150-1350 lb cows w/newborn to 100 lb calves 1075.00-1235.00; few lighter-
weight cows, single pair lots, or those with mixed colored calves 900.00-1000.00 
per pair.
