November 18, 2009 (REPORT 46) FOREIGN TYPE CHEESE The weekly average price for blocks advanced on the CME Group, resulting in higher wholesale prices for domestic foreign type cheese with the exception of Swiss cuts, which were unchanged. Imported cheese prices were unchanged. In the latest Foreign Agricultural Statistics report. January-September 2009 exports of cheese and curd from the United States totaled 170.6 million pounds, a 25.6% decrease from the same period in 2008. Leading destinations, amounts shipped, and percent changes in amounts shipped compared to the same time period last year include: Mexico, 66.2 million pounds (+11.4%); South Korea, 16.7 million pounds (-30.4%); Canada, 15.2 million pounds (-12.9%) and Japan, 10.2 million pounds (-39.8%). Mexico, South Korea, Canada, and Japan account for 63.5% of the total U.S. cheese exports. Imports of Swiss/Emmenthaler varieties from January through October 2009 totaled 39.6 million pounds, 0.9% more than the same period last year. Norway and Finland, the two top sources, account for 69.5% of Swiss/Emmenthaler imports through this October.
