November 24, 2009 (REPORT 47) NORTHEAST WHOLESALE CHEESE: Weekly average cheese prices on the CME Group were again mixed this week with blocks advancing and barrels declining. As a result wholesale cheese prices for cheddar and Muenster increased, processed cheeses declined and Swiss cuts were unchanged. Production continues to be active as cheese makers continue to fill holiday and other orders. The latest NASS Cold Storage report shows stocks of natural cheese in cold storage as of October 31, 2009 total 968.4 million pounds, 2% below one month ago, but 17% higher than one year ago. A majority of the holdings are in the form of American cheese (59.9%) totaling 579.6 million pounds, 3% below one month ago, but 7% higher than one year ago. The next highest natural cheese holdings in cold storage are in the form of Other Natural Cheese, (37.7%) totaling 365.3 million pounds, equal to one month ago and 37% higher than one year ago. Swiss cheese accounts for 2.4% of holdings at 23.5 million pounds, 2% more than one month ago and 7% more than one year ago.
