November 18, 2009 (REPORT 46) NORTHEAST WHOLESALE CHEESE: The weekly average cheese prices on the CME Group were mixed as barrels declined and blocks advanced. As a result process declined, cheddars and Muenster advanced, while Swiss cuts remained unchanged. Seasonal production declines and strong Class I demand limit manufacturing supplies for cheese makers. Due to the tight fluid supplies, some cheese makers have modified their production schedules to include weekends when milk supplies are more readily available. According to the latest Foreign Agricultural Statistics report, imports of high tier and quota cheese from January through October this year totaled 183.3 million pounds. Imports of quota cheese through October totaled 164 million pounds, 13.3% above the same period last year and 54.8% of the annual quota. Imports of high tier cheese through this October total 19.3 million pounds, down 26.1% from the same period in 2008.
