JC_LS795 Jefferson City, MO Fri Feb 10, 2012 MO Dept of Ag/USDA Market News Missouri Weekly Weighted Average Feeder Cattle Report – Week Ending 2/10/12 Receipts: 32,282 Week Ago: 36,601 Year Ago: 22,201 Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold unevenly steady. Prices covered the whole spectrum this week and seemingly no single solid rhyme or reason as to why. Weakness was evident in some mid weight steer calves despite the fact most weighted average prices trended near steady. Heifers especially those of replacement quality over 650 lbs had some definite strength with several high quality heifers selling for the same amount or slightly more than the top steers of the same weight ranges anywhere in the state. Markets were generally lacking any true direction as prices seem to be caught in a slight lull. Most grass orders have been filled and several of those who still desire to own cattle, despite falling receipts each week and overall tighter supplies, are holding out as grass remains several weeks away and legitimate fears of possible winter storms exist. Packer margins which have been in the red for several weeks resulted in the slowest chain speed since March of 2009 as packers continue to cut slaughter hours. This week’s exports however are up substantially from last weeks and the Choice Boxed Beef Cut-out is near 3.00 higher than last Friday. As the case has been for about as long as we remember feed lot trade has yet to develop as of this report.
