AM_LS169 Amarillo, TX Mon Nov 23, 2009 USDA-TX Dept of Ag Market News Superior Video Auction Recap– Fri Nov 20, 2009 0fferings: 20,500 Compared to the last sale: Feeder steers and heifers were mixed and uneven but mostly 1.00-3.00 lower except for a limited offerings of light calves under 550 lbs in the South Central and East which were steady to as much as 6.00 higher on a few comparable sales. Light calves which were bound for wheat pastures showed the biggest improvement but were restricted mostly to the Eastern part of the Southern Plains or the South East Region. Wheat pastures in Central Oklahoma, Kansas, and the Northern Part of Texas have had adequate moisture but areas further west are struggling at best. In fact several areas in the Panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas desperately need a shower. Dry land wheat germination in those areas has been sporadic, with limited growth potential. Correspondingly, calf prices in those dry areas have suffered the past few weeks. The extremely wet areas in South East and Central Texas have also seen interrupted movement as well as limited demand for calves in recent weeks as farmers struggle to plant oat and rye pastures for winter grazing. The yearling trade bound for feedlots has been sparse with prices 1.00-3.00 lower on the heels of the recent declines in finished cattle prices. Many of the true yearlings have already been sold and several feedlots are busy taking in previously contracted cattle. Pen space is limited in those lots that have had a large amount of contracts. Recent closeouts have once again returned to the negative area in the majority of cases. Increasing grain prices and their affect on cost of gains has put pressure on feeders for current deliveries as well as contracts. Supply moderate, trade and demand light to moderate, except light calves near wheat pastures which were moderate to good. The South Central Region had the most receipts and the only respectable test, except for a limited test of light calves in the South Eastern Region. The other regions had an extremely light test, and not enough comparable sales for a trend analysis. The SOUTH CENTRAL REGION sold approx. 58 percent of the receipts.
