AM_LS165 Amarillo, TX Fri Feb 05, 2010 USDA-TX Dept of Ag Market News Texas Weekly Direct Feeder Cattle Summary Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for Friday - 02/05/10 Confirmed: 19,200 Last Week: 20,100 Last Year: 21,200 Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers mostly steady with the end of last week’s lower trade, however not well tested for immediate delivered cattle due the parade of snow storms and impossible road conditions in many areas. Many feedlots have postponed new arrivals as their crews struggle to keep up with normal activities and snow/slop removal. The average live weight for slaughter cattle in the Panhandle dropped 11 lbs last week to 1251 lbs and had only been impacted by two days of storms. There is considerable anticipation that the average live weight will drop further as the full effects of the storms become apparent. Wheat pasture cattle have also endured the past week of storms with wheat buried under over a foot of snow in many places. Many wheat pastures can only be reached with a tractor or by horseback due to the impassable roads and thawing snow. This recent moisture will provide better grazing ahead but there is already talk of cattle being pulled off of wheat so they do not trample it and hurt grain yields. There are more storms being predicted during the next week, which will no doubt affect performance further. Approximately 95 percent of this week's cattle weighed over 600 lbs. Approximately 51 percent of this week's receipts were steers and 49 percent heifers. Prices based on net weights FOB after a 3 percent shrink or equivalent and 5-10 cent slide on calves and 4-6 cent slide on yearlings from base weights. Delivered prices include freight, commissions and other expenses. Current sales are up to 14 days delivery.
