July 02, 2009 USDA Market News Broiler/Fryer: Daily National Broiler Market at-a-Glance Majority prices were trending lower in the Midwest, unchanged elsewhere when compared to early week prices. Trade sentiment was steady to barely steady in the Midwest, steady to at least steady in the East, and steady in the West. Retail demand was light to good, mostly fair to moderate, best where retail promotions were in progress. Food service demand was light to moderate, good into fast food and catering. Supplies ranged adequate to available to satisfy current trade needs. Floor stocks covered the full range. In the parts structure, movement was fair to fairly good for late week business. Breast items were adequate to tight with boneless skinless and tenders in the strongest position. Wings were sufficient and dark meat items were more than sufficient. In production areas, live supplies were moderate. Weights were desirable to light. According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) for the week ending 27-Jun-2009, broiler egg sets were down 4% and chick placements were down 5% when compared to a year ago. Based on the preliminary chick placements, the number of fryers available for marketing during the week ending 08-Aug-2009 is estimated at 157.0 million head, this compares to 157.1 million head a week earlier.
