MD_DA830 DA MD DA830 Cheese - Midwest MADISON, WI. July 2, 2008 (REPORT 27) MIDWEST CHEESE: The cheese market is unsettled though with an occasional weak undertone. Recent activity on the CME Group cash cheese market, including a seeming increase in the number of offered loads left on the board at the close, indicates cheddar is available for sale. Plant offerings have increased over the past few weeks though as one buyer put it, 'no discounts are being offered either.' Reports indicate some tightness in 640 boxes available for refilling; indicating many still have cheese in them. Many cutters and packagers ran some lines on overtime in previous weeks to allow employees at least a three day holiday weekend. Bulk cheese volumes needed this week were lower as a result. Process is generally moderate to good and, like natural, generally better on store brand/generic than branded products. Mozzarella sales continue to show the normally lighter summer interest with some pizza packagers on further reduced holiday schedules. Cheese production remains near peak levels in much of the upper Midwest as heat stress has been minimal thus far. Cheese yields are drifting lower seasonally.
