THE NORMAL SALE SCHEDULE WILL RESUME JULY 7TH. ********************************************* Receipts This Week: 3,258 Last Week: 3,056 Year ago: 8,357 Compared to last week, steer calves sold 3.00 to 8.00 lower; however, 550 to 650 lb steer calves traded fully steady. Heifer calves sold steady to 3.00 lower. Yearling steers sold mostly 2.00 to 4.00 higher. Yearling heifers sold mostly steady on a light test. Slaughter cows sold steady. Slaughter bulls sold steady. Demand was very light for steer calves under 500 lbs. Demand for heifer calves was moderate to good with the best demand being for 3 wgt heifers. Demand for yearling steers was very good. It could be seen as ironic that here at the start of summer with the grass green and vibrant steer calves under five hundred pounds just couldn’t find any traction. However, back in February when we were suffering through the rigors of the winter season with all its’ inclemency, buyer’s eyes would light up when these three and four weight steers would hit the sale ring. This twist of fate for lightweight steers could be seen as a derivative of the cost of inputs. Simply put, today’s lightweight steers are going to hit the winter season as five and six weights and cost not only summer and fall pasture money but a full winter of feed charges. On the other hand, February’s lightweights didn’t consume much winter feed and were a short hop to April grass. The supply included 12% slaughter cows, 02% slaughter bulls, 01% replacements and 85% feeder cattle. The feeder supply included 53% steers, 16% bulls, 31% heifers. Steers and heifers over 600 lbs totaled 47.0% of feeder cattle.
