JO_GR116 Portland, OR Thu Aug 21, 2008 USDA Market News Portland Weekly Grain Review Part 2 Pacific Northwest Add Weekly Grain Summary Cash Soft White Wheat - Pacific Northwest: Bids for US Soft White Wheat for August Portland delivery ended the reporting week on Thursday at 8.35 to 8.70, mostly 8.40. This was five to 15 cents per bushel higher than last Thursday's noon bids of 8.30 to 8.55, mostly 8.40 for last half August delivery. White club wheat premiums were 10 to 15 cents, mostly 10 per bushel over soft white wheat bids compared to week ago premiums of zero to 15 cents, mostly ten cents. One year ago, bids for US 1 Soft White Wheat for August delivery were 6.85 to 6.90, mostly 6.87. Year ago white club wheat premiums were two to ten cents, mostly five cents per bushel, over soft white wheat bids. Bids for US 1 Soft White Wheat for nearby Portland delivery began the reporting week on Friday at mostly 8.30, then rose to mostly 8.45 on Monday in reaction to sharply higher Chicago September wheat futures that day. Bids held at mostly 8.45 on Tuesday, declined to 8.35 on Wednesday, then rose to mostly 8.40 on Thursday, the reporting week's close. Chicago September wheat futures fluctuated wildly during the week but ended the reporting week on Thursday substantially higher compared to last Thursday's close, and this was supportive to cash soft white wheat bids. Confirmed new export sales of white wheat made during the week were limited to Japan. Forward month bids were as follows: September 8.60 to 8.76; October 8.70 to 8.81; November 8.75 to 8.86; and December 8.80 to 8.90. Outstanding U.S. white wheat export sales as of August 14, 2008 for the marketing year beginning June 1, 2008 and ending May 31, 2009, totaled 953.2 thousand MT compared to 1,022.8 thousand on August 7, 2008, and 1,128.3 thousand one year ago. Outstanding white wheat export sales for the 2008-2009 marketing year were to the following countries in 1,000 MT: Philippines 353.1, Japan 219.1, South Korea 115.9, Thailand 61.8, Indonesia 58.0, Sri Lanka 55.0, Singapore 20.0, Malaysia 17.0, Guatemala 10.2, Vietnam 9.9, Taiwan 9.1, Hong Kong 1.5, Canada 1.1 and total unknown 21.4. Accumulated white wheat export shipments as of August 14, 2008, in 1,000 MT for the 2008-2009 marketing year, totaled 363.9 compared to 818.5 last year. Outstanding U.S. barley export sales as of August 14, 2008 for the marketing year beginning June 1, 2008 and ending May 31, 2009 in 1,000 MT, totaled 132.9 compared to 134.4 on August 7, 2008 and 214.1 one year ago. Outstanding barley export sales were to the following countries in 1,000 MT: Japan 87.5, Canada 24.3, Mexico 18.8 and Taiwan 2.3. Accumulated barley export shipments as of August 14, 2008 were 15.3 thousand MT compared to 25.0 thousand one year ago. Coarse feeding grains: Bids for US 2 Barley delivered to the coast in unit trains or barges during August were 1.00 to 3.00 per ton higher at 225.00 compared to week ago bids of 222.00 to 224.00. Bids for September delivery were 1.00 higher at 225.00 compared to last Thursday's bids of 224.00. Bids for October delivery were not well tested. Bids for US 2 Barley delivered to the inland feeding areas of Hermiston, Oregon and Yakima, Washington were not well tested. Bids for US 2 Yellow Corn delivered to Portland in single rail cars were 14.25 to 15.50 per ton higher at 261.00. Bids for US 2 Yellow Corn truck delivered to the inland feeding areas of Yakima, Washington, and Hermiston, Oregon, were 14.50 to 19.75 per ton higher at 247.50 to 255.25. Sharply higher Chicago September corn futures for the week were supportive to cash corn bids. Bids for corn truck delivered to inland feeding areas were further supported by the decreasing old crop supplies of corn grown in the Pacific Northwest. Bids for US 2 Heavy White Oats for August delivery were not well tested in extremely limited trading, but were indicated as 220.00, steady with last Thursday's noon bids.
