From: bdaniel@stanford.edu Sent: Friday, July 28, 2006 5:30 AM To: MarketingClaim Subject: Docket No. LS-05-09 Dear FDA We love beef, but only eat organic grassfed beef because we are very worried about the lack of sustainability, negative environmental impact, and health risks of eating conventional beef. We are concerned about the proposed standard for labeling grassfed beef. While we support proper labeling in general, it is critical that this regulation not dilute the meaning of this important food label. The proposed labeling MUST BE STRENGHTHENED ALOT to preserve the important safety and qualities of grassfed beef: "Grassfed" beef should include ALL of the following: 1. 100% Organic feed (per USDA standards) (not 90%, not 100% unless not available - NO EXCEPTIONS. PERIOD) 2. Only hay and grass feed - not corn that has simply not been shucked 3. Vegetarian feed only - no animal parts, byproducts or enrichment with animal proteins. 4. NO FEEDLOT - Grassfed cows should be free-range their entire life - no force feeding in containment. 5. No Antibiotics, no hormones. 6. Close herds - No offspring obtained from non-grassfed cattle. 7. Testing for Mad Cow Disease (BSE) is not prohibited, but is allowed. 8. No genetically modified Cattle. Thank for your attention to this matter. We want to be able to continue to feed out daughter beef, but if grassfed standards get weakened, we will have to stop, so that we can feel safe about her health and the environment. Bruce L.
