O'Connor, Chief, Standardization Branch, Livestock and Seed Program, AMS, USDA, Room 2607-S 1400 Independence Avenue, SW. Washington, DC 20250-0254 Cc: Tim Holden Re: Comment, Docket No. LS-05-09 [The Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) is soliciting comments on a revised proposed voluntary[[Page 27663]] standard for a grass (forage) fed marketing claim. Comments must be received on or before August 10, 2006.] Dear Mr. O'Connor, "Grass Fed" is meant to describe a raised-for-food animal whose life is spent in nature, in a pasture, on the range, with grass, and forage, but NOT raised or kept in confinement, NOT fed any antibiotics or hormones, NOT fed genetically modified anything. He/she is cared for and allowed to live a happy, wholesome life. The quality of this kind of meat is unsurpassable, and it deserves to be labeled as what it is. Labeling other lesser meats as Grass Fed is sneaky and absolutely deceptive. The USDA proposal would allow animals to be kept in confinement, fed harvested forage, corn silage and other grains that have not been separated from their stalks. If this proposed claim passes into regulation you could see feedlot beef fed antibiotics, hormones and legally be labeled grass fed Beef. As a conscientious and caring consumer, I believe that the standard for grass fed must include reference to being raised ON PASTURE with a restriction of confinement feeding systems. Thank you. ------------------------------ Randi Peters Natural Horse Magazine PO Box 758 Leesport, PA 19533-0758 www.naturalhorse.com publisher@naturalhorse.com 800-660-8923 / 610-926-0427 Fax: 610-926-0238
