Participation in the Proficiency Check Sample Program
Once a laboratory is admitted into the program, there are requirements that need to be met in order to maintain program status. This involves the participation in the proficiency check sample program, an annual announced or unannounced on-site laboratory review, and the payment of maintenance fees.
Each peanut crop year, the 12-month period beginning July 1 of any year and ending June 30 of the following year, an aflatoxin check sample program is conducted by AMS. Starting in September and ending in April, one prepared sample of peanut paste is sent to each USDA and USDA-approved laboratory monthly for a total of eight months and eight samples. The laboratory must analyze each sample and send the results to the Program Manager by the date indicated. A statistical analysis is performed on the results and reported to the laboratory. The laboratory must meet expected performance standards.
