Legislative authority for FSMIP is provided under Section 204(b) of the U.S. Agricultural Marketing Act of 1946 (7 U.S.C. 1621 et seq.). FSMIP is funded by annual appropriations to the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), USDA. AMS anticipates that approximately $1.3 million will be available for support for this program in fiscal year (FY) 2009. Approximately 25 projects are funded each year. The average grant award is $50,000.
