/ FDA/AMS Partnerships
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) proactively leverages its resources and expertise to address consumer expectations for safe and nutritious food. For example:
We’ve partnered with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which has federal oversight for food safety, and Cornell University to form the
Produce Safety Alliance
. The Alliance, which provides leadership in the produce safety arena, is working on several initiatives including the development of national good agricultural practices (GAPs).
We have a dedicated employee serving as liaison between the department and the FDA to assist with the development of food safety regulations.
We’re working with the leafy greens industry on their proposed
National Leafy Greens Agreement
. As part of this effort we held seven hearing across the nation last year to gather industry input and feedback on the proposed rule.
And we support the FDS’s efforts to establish
mandatory fruit and vegetable production standards
.
