The Livestock Mandatory Reporting Act of 1999 (as authorized by Public Law 106-8, Title 9) requires livestock packers, livestock processors, and importers covered under the act to report specific data on livestock purchases and boxed beef and lamb sales. This data is entered into reports and issued by the Livestock and Grain Market News (LGMN) Branch. The reports provide current and unbiased price and sales information which is used by livestock producers and packers to assist them in determining the fair market value of livestock, lamb carcasses, lamb and boxed beef.
To assure the accuracy of the data submitted by the packers, the Compliance section of the Audit, Review and Compliance (ARC) Branch conducts audits of the data and the companies covered by the Act. The results of the audits are shared with the LGMN Branch. LGMN utilizes the information gathered from the audits to assist them in working with the companies to ensure compliance with the Act.
