Laboratory Verification Program for Pork - Background  
In year 2008, 218,000 metric tons of pork products, in the value of $476 million, were exported from the United States to the Russia Federation. In recent years, this exportation fell to a level of 70,000-80,000 metric ton (about $230 million) per year.

 
Pork products must be tested for certain residues in order to meet the requirements of the USDA FSIS Veterinary Certificate for Pork Meat Exported into the Russian Federation. Specifically, tetracyclines, Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, and Total Plate Count were tested from year 2010.

 
The test for those residues may be performed either by government or private laboratories, with the Agricultural Marketing Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture verifying the reliability of test results provided by laboratories. The verification of the reliability of laboratory results necessitated the development by AMS of a private laboratory review program. This web site outlines the protocol for the Laboratory Verification Program for the Analysis of Pork Products Destined for Exportation from the United States to Russia.

 
It must be understood that the approval afforded under this laboratory verification program is only for the testing required on pork exported to the Russian Federation. Laboratory acceptance into this program does not confer a general USDA laboratory approval, nor does it confer approval of the performance of the program analyses on any product other than pork to be exported to the Russian Federation.
