Why establish an advisory committee instead of the Farm Bill Federal order commission?

The Federal order commission was more narrowly focused on dairy issues as they related to Federal milk marketing orders. The advisory committee is designed to be more comprehensive. In addition, the Commission establishment is subject to funding appropriations that have not been allocated.

What is the purpose of the Advisory Committee?

The Advisory Committee will review farm milk price volatility and dairy farmer profitability and provide suggestions and ideas to the Secretary on how USDA can best address these issues to meet the dairy industry’s needs.

What was the Nomination Process?

Nominations, in the form of a letter, were received and described the proposed member’s qualifications for membership to the Committee and listed their name, title, address, telephone, and fax number. The Secretary of Agriculture sought a diverse group of members representing a broad spectrum of persons interested in providing suggestions and ideas on how USDA can tailor its programs to meet the dairy industry’s needs.

Individuals nominated received necessary forms from USDA for membership. The biographical information and clearance forms were completed and returned to USDA within 10 working days of notification expediting the clearance process required before the selection of Committee members by the Secretary of Agriculture.
