The Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) will utilize LFPA program funds to strengthen its local and regional food systems, help to support local and socially disadvantaged farmers/producers through building and expanding economic opportunities, and establish and broaden partnerships with farmers/producers and the food distribution community and local food networks to ensure distribution of fresh and nutritious foods in rural, remote, and underserved communities. To do this, GDA will, through the LFPA program, (1) increase production and processing capacity of Georgia grown beef and specialty foods, (2) distribute food throughout Georgia to underserved communities, and (3) generate revenue for social disadvantaged farmers and ranchers. As part of this program, GDA and its collaborators will provide outreach, technical assistance, and coordination with socially disadvantage producers across Georgia to help increase the state’s food production. The eight regional Georgia food banks will play a key role in distributing the food to underserved communities. Beneficiaries include the residents of the State of Georgia. Performance evidence in the form of measurable outcomes will be reported by GDA as required, culminating with a final report at the end of the grant period. GDA is confident that, through this program, it can build a stronger, more versatile, and more resilient food system/supply chain network that benefits all Georgians for many years to come.
